doing my usual early morning facebook news feed read-thru-and-share session this morning i came across a link that has me literally shaking.
mary, the paleo chef posted an article about a school in richmond, virginia who does not allow children to bring their own lunches unless they have a doctor's note.

A letter featured on the website Momdot.com instructs parents that packed lunches must be accompanied with a physician’s note. |
'scue me but when did i sign over the right to be able to decide what is best for my children? who decided that the opinion of a doctor is the better opinion? when did parents lose merit as decision-makers in their own households.
my family follows -- or at least tries to follow -- paleo eating. this means a different things to different people but for us it means eating more meat, vegetables, nuts and fruit and less processed crap. these things do not a school lunch make. so our kids pack their own.
my children aren't allowed cereal because it's basically of bowl of crack. they eat grass-fed dairy and almond milk and homemade larabars for breakfast. high amounts of protein. low amounts of junk. "whole grains"?! more like "whole lot of crap". we don't eat 'em. we also don't eat a lot of dairy. what?! i know. crazy.
while my pediatrician is a bit more progressive, and i'm sure would have no problem writing a note for me to take to my son's or my daughter's schools, that's not the point.
the point is: why on earth do i need their permission or blessing?
these are my tiny humans and i will decide what is best for them. i am their mother. that is my job. i don't have to justify, validate or explain my decisions about my children to anyone.
and as far as the melissa harris-perry video at the bottom goes.... i'll say this. while i can understand and appreciate the "it takes a village" undertone in her comments, the only other person on this planet that can refer to my children as "our children" is my husband, their father. WE decide how our children are raised. it is not up to "the village" to decide what is best for them. "your village" should be an extension of our home - whether dietary, morally, socially or otherwise. if not, we find a new village.
how do you feel about this school requiring a doctor's note for parents to send in lunches for their children to school? any thoughts on the melissa harris-perry video?

Girllllllllllllllllllllllllllll!!!!!! Oh this infuriates me! What ever happened to freedom in this country? Talk about control and manipulation - to the 'NTH degree! Wow. Just wow. Of course, I too would be able to get a doctor's note for every single one of my children, but that's not the point. The point is that they better not EVEN try to go there. Period. But seriously, trying to go there while serving crap with nothing better to offer and saying it's mandatory - oh, and let's throw in a bit of genetically modified junk while we're at it - crazy. Pure and simple. Just crazy.
ReplyDeleteOh girl don't I know! AND it gets better. I've since learned that public GA funded Pre-K programs in Georgia are the same way. Still have some research to do on my own about it but a girlfriend in Paulding County told me about it. They put their son in private school and it wasn't an issue. @@$&*&!*&@^$*&@%*#*%#(
