What is a Bugaroo?

Funny you should ask. For those that know me, Bugaroo is a no-brainer. For those that don't, well, it probably just sounds like a cute little word. Fact is, it's both: a cute little no-brainer word. Here's the story.

I have two AMAZING babies: Riley who is 8 (how did that happen!?!?) and Lily who is 19 months. I also have an obsession with nicknames. I'll call total strangers something random just because it slips out and I have absolutely no filter whatsoever. When it comes to my kids, while I call them anything from Bean to Boo-Boo, there are 2 names that are undeniably their own:

Riley Roo and Lily Bug

When I asked Riley what to name my shop he so eloquently said, "Duh mom! Bugaroo!" BRILLIANT! He looked at me like I was a few screws short and said, "It's our names squooshed together." I'm not worthy.

Rewind back to 2003 when Riley was a baby. That's when I first had the idea for my boutique - I just never did anything with it. I had to go back to work when he was 4 months old and I wasn't sure if I would ever have any more kids so I just shelved the idea of ever having my own baby business. Then my sweet Lily came along and changed it all.

With Riley, we found out he was going to be a boy as soon as we could so I had 9 months to buy anything and everything that was blue or football related (GO DAWGS!) But, while pregnant with Lily, my husband and I decided to keep her gender a secret. We chose a very gender neutral polka dotted theme for her room with lots of green, orange and yellow. Everything was very neutral, neutral, neutral.....until December 8, 2009 when my husband saw her for the first time and told me "It's a Girl!" (Seriously, the best story ever - maybe I'll tell that one another day over another cup of coffee.)

We introduced Lily to the world dressed in green and yellow and I quickly realized, this just won't do. What's happened next? You guessed it! She all but got hosed down in pink and purple....and ladybugs (they're my fave!) I wanted everything to be pretty and girlie....even her bibs and burp cloths.

Once again the engines were back on.....I needed to make super cute baby stuff that doesn't cost a lot and will still get the job done. I just needed a name and a theme. Riley quickly brought me 50% of the way there by giving me the name so it was up to me to decide what kind of look I wanted my products to have. Adding a colorful strip of fabric to a cloth diaper wasn't my own invention so I had to put my own Katie twist on it - so I took it old school. I've always loved all things retro and vintage so I decided to incorporate that into my business. (Check out my Bugaroo Fabrics photo album for all of my funky fabric options.)
